Money Back Guarantee

Is it worth it to make an investment in you?

I do a lot of self-assessing.  A lot. And I never shy away from the hard questions.  One of the things that recently came to mind was how a lot of people can't be counted on.  Sure, people like to think they can, but when put to the test, a lot of people fall short.  Think about it.  How many people in your circle would you call on if it was your one shot of getting what you needed?  Who would that person be?  And I'm not talking big stuff.  I'm talking the little things in life that have huge impacts.  Things like keeping your word.  Coming through in a crunch.  Doing what you have agreed to do.

A lot of people don't come to mind.  At least not for me.  There are a select few that I can count on, and I'm sure its the same for you.  The people in that group are my MBG Crew (Money Back Guarantee).  I incur little to no risk when I call upon them, because they are who they say they are.  There are others who I would like to have in this category, because they come across as good people, but they are sketchy.  One way one day and another way on another.

Aside from personal relationships, I thought of this from the perspective of a brand.  Branding is the big marketing word of the day.  Everybody has a brand, is building a brand, wants to be associated with a brand, or is looking for a way to build one that people will flow towards.  The problem is that all brands aren't quality brands.  Some are no value, low value, mid value, or gold.  The question is, which one are you?  Do you come with a money back guarantee?  Are you gold or do you just want to associate with the gold brands.

There is a lot of talk about having the type of life you want.  And no life is a cake walk.  We all have things to overcome, but at some point all of us have to determine what type of person we are going to be known for being.  Will people take risks when dealing with you?  Supporting you?  Or will they know without a shadow of doubt that you come with a Money Back Guarantee.

A Snitches Reward?

Of all the things a young black man in urban America couldn’t afford to be labeled with, a snitch, had to be somewhere close to the top of the list. Nobody wanted to associate with a snitch. To do so might earn you a snitches reward. Since it was characteristic for the person accused of having loose lips to deny the accusation, they always bore the burden of proof of innocence. Meanwhile, the perpetrator of the deed could continue doing their dirt, confident that the streets would direct its attention on silencing the snitch. It didn’t matter what the truth was. The hood had its own rules. Therefore, rule number one has always been and will continue to be – keep your mouth shut.

This is an excerpt from "Pick and Roll", a story I published in 2009 as part of an anthology entitled "Don't Hate The Game" (Michael T. Owens)

Somebody should have enlightened D'Angelo Russel of this rule, but that's water under the bridge at this point.  What I want to know is this -  Why is it that no matter how enlightened, spiritually-minded, or mature we get do we hold onto thought processes that defy our belief systems?  Don't get me wrong, the boy messed up.  Big time.  But do we ever grow enough in life to overlook offenses of this sort and how does a kid like this navigate his way back to the shore?  I see this potentially ruining his career.  What say you?

Five Years to the Day

It's been five years to the day since I last posted here and looking back, I can say that it's been a hell of a time. Sure, there were some good days in there, some very memorable ones in fact, but so much has happened since I was last here. A lot of pain, a lot of struggling, a lot of enduring, but also a lot of overcoming. It seems more like ten years have passed as opposed to five. If I were to categorize it, I would say that I've gone through a cleansing. A cleansing of bad habits, bad behavior, and bad thinking, and now that I'm on the other side, I can honestly say that I'm a changed man. A rehabilitated man.

In some ways I feel like Red, played by Morgan Freeman in the movie Shawshank Redemption, because it feels like I've done hard time. Time that continued to evolve until I was willing to let go of every chain, every bit of deception, every person that had no rightful place in my life, every thought of defeat, every hindrance to my purpose, everything that kept me tied to a wrong path. And now the days are finally starting to feel brighter, like a true breakthrough is occurring. And I feel good. I feel at peace. I feel like God has removed his hand of resistance and that my time to walk in the fullness of his blessing has arrived. While I'm sure that there will be other life challenges, I can honestly say that I'm grateful for today.

The Art of Letting Go

Enlightenment brings about optimism.  In fact, I'm excited about the coming days/year because I've learned about the Art of Letting Go. This isn't the letting go of people, which certainly isn't a bad thing, but the letting go of the need to be in control; the control of the direction of your life.

If you are like myself and have listened to conventional wisdom and you've worked and worked and tried and tried and still haven't fully obtained the fruit of your efforts, then this should be helpful.

The secret to the art of letting go is to simply focus on the areas that you have the power to change.

For example, if you know in your heart that you should be a best selling author don't frustate yourself because the sales aren't coming your way. You can't make anyone buy your book(s) no matter how well you market. What you can do is focus on becoming a better writer while simultaneously putting out a good product from cover to cover and then allow the sales to come your way. That's not to say you don't market but more importantly you focus on giving your best self. If you give of your best self consistently, everything meant for you will come to fruition. This works because more times than not, we can't see the thing God is trying to work out in us, because we are too busy seeking the reward when we should be seeking to be complete.

This is the state I find myself in these days.  I'm still focused, still goal oriented, but rather than focus on the reward - which I have no control over - I'm spending my days working to improve those areas in my life that I know require more input. So in effect, I let go of what I can't change and change the things that I've been empowered to.

It sounds simple, but thanks to pride it's not the most obvious path. For what I'm finding is that as you embrace the art of letting go, and you continue to evolve into your better self, you become more capable to recieve the reward you thought you had to work to obtain in the first place.

Be blessed.

Who Am I?

I’ve been heralded as one of the greatest Presidents to come out of the Republican party.
Here is my legacy:

I provided amnesty to undocumented immigrants

I grew the size of the Federal Government and the budget, while adding a whole new Cabinet level agency. I added tens of thousands of Government workers to the Federal payroll. In the process, I tripled the deficit.

I bailed out and expanded Social Security by introducing higher taxes.

I raised Corporate taxes by hundreds of Billions of dollars.

I raised taxes on gasoline.

I signed the largest tax increase in the history of the United States.

I supported federal hand gun controls.

I called for a world without nuclear weapons.

Despite how all of this is perceived, I’m still regarded as one of the greatest Presidents to ever live. I am Ronald Reagan.

I’m the President who will always be remembered simply because of the historic precedence of my being elected to office. In HALF a term I have made historic landmarks.

Here is the BEGINNING of my legacy.

I passed the Wall Street Reform Agreement

I passed Health Care Reform

I created a stimulus bill that pumped approximately $100 Billion into our crumbling infrastructure and transport system. The only other President to do anything close was Eisenhower, who by the way our highway system is named for.

I made a historic investment of $60 Billion towards renewable and clean energy.

I made an unheralded huge investment in science and technology by improving the budgets at NASA, The National Science Foundation, and an Experimental Research Agency created but not funded by President Bush.

I expanded State kids health insurance to cover another four million kids

I signed a nuclear arms deal with Russia that reduces both countries arsenals by a third, steps that go toward President Reagan’s vision of a world without nuclear weapons.

I signed into law The Hate Crimes Prevention Act otherwise known as The Matthew Sheppard Act which has languished in Congress for years.

I called for the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco for the first time in US History.

I dismantled the Minerals Management Service to keep those who collect money from oil leases from being responsible for regulating the industry. In effect ending the corruption that has been taking place for years.

I fired two war time Generals in a little less than a year.

I stopped the banking industry from being subsidized with government funds through their offering of student loans backed by the government. The savings in making that move are now put toward actual aid to students.

I got rid of weapons programs designed to do nothing more than pad the pockets of Defense companies because the weapons created were not used in either of the two recent wars fought. The weapon was the F-22. This type of move is unprecedented because weapons programs are never cancelled.

This is just the amount of work I have been able to accomplish in half my term. I know some people don’t like me, but work is getting done, work that will make the future bright for all Americans.

Vote on November 2nd and help me to accomplish more for the American people.  I am President Barack Obama.

Urban Kings

I found this story on Yahoo and again on Huffington Post. I felt this was something that needed to be shared. I didn't feel any need to put my spin on it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

SHARON COHEN | 06/28/10 01:56 AM | Associated Press

CHICAGO — For each boy, the new school offered an escape and a chance at a life that seemed beyond reach.

Krishaun Branch was getting D's, smoking reefer a lot, skipping school twice a week. His mother was too busy working to know what he was doing. He liked to hang out in the streets; having relatives in gangs was his armor.

When a young man came to tell his eighth-grade class about a new high school on Chicago's South Side, Krishaun wanted no part of it – until he heard students would have laptops. Suddenly, he was on board.

Marlon Marshall was nonchalant about everything, school included. His mother pressed him to go to college, but it seemed like a pipe dream. Sometimes she'd yell at him and his brothers for his bad grades. Once she just cried when she picked up their report cards.

Marlon had heard, too, about the new school. Students would be accepted by lottery so his mediocre grades wouldn't disqualify him. He thought it was worth a shot.

Marcus Bass figured there just had to be something better for him. Barely a teen, he'd been shot at, robbed a couple of times and had seen terrible things in his housing project. His parents argued constantly; life was chaotic.

He was sold by the recruiter's description of a "different" high school.

Urban Prep would be a charter high school. It would bring together some 150 boys from some of the poorest, gang-ravaged neighborhoods and try to set them on a new track. They'd have strict rules: A longer school day – by two hours. Two classes of English daily. A uniform with jackets and ties.

And Urban Prep had a goal – one that seemed audacious, given that just 4 percent of the Class of 2010 was reading at or above grade level when they arrived at the school in 2006.

In four years, they were told, they'd be heading to college.

___

From the very start, Tim King had a grand plan.

"I wanted to create a school that was going to put black boys in a different place," says the founder of Urban Prep, "and in my mind, that different place needed to be college."

It had taken four years for King to win permission to open the Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men, which receives about 75 percent of its funding from the Chicago public schools; the rest is private.

King's plan was both idealistic and grounded in the harsh realities of inner-city life: He'd take boys from tough situations, many way behind in school, and if they followed his road map, they'd get into college.

If the premise seemed simple, implementing it was anything but.

About 85 percent of the Class of 2010 came from low-income families, the overwhelming majority single mother households. The students would face problems far beyond poor academics.

Safety, for example. Some kids had to alter their bus routes so they wouldn't face gangs who might see their blazers and ties as inviting targets.

The uniforms are part of a philosophy that blends discipline with an oath that is the school's guiding principle. Every morning, students repeat the creed:

"We believe... We are college bound. ...

"We are exceptional – not because we say it, but because we work hard at it ....

"We believe in ourselves. ... We believe."

___

Krishaun didn't believe.

When he discovered what he'd signed up for, he wanted out immediately.

No girls? School until 4:30 p.m.? A jacket and tie? You've got to be kidding. But his mother urged him to hang in. So did an aunt who threatened to stop buying him clothes and giving him spending money.

So he stayed, and raised hell.

He fought, he cursed the teachers, he got suspended. He wanted to get kicked out.

"I went to the principal and said, 'I don't want to be here. Just send me home,'" he recalls. "I didn't like the discipline. I didn't like the surroundings. I didn't like the uniform. I didn't like anything.'

Krishaun started sophomore year on probation. He was failing some classes and straddling two worlds: A student at Urban Prep. And a kid clinging to street life who'd tuck a white T-shirt into his bag – part of the uniform of the gangbangers – so he could hang out with them.

After fighting with another student sophomore year, Krishaun transferred to a Chicago public school. But he couldn't stop his downhill slide, earning lots of F's and D's.

Then came a brutal wake-up call. A close friend was beaten to death.

Krishaun started seeing Urban Prep in a new light. He pleaded to return.

"I knew I was going down the wrong path," he says. "I had to graduate or my life was going to be nothing. ... I'd seen the streets were not going to get me anywhere."

He lobbied Evan Lewis, the recruiter who'd visited his elementary school and had become a mentor.

"He didn't take no or maybe for an answer," Lewis says.

Krishaun was readmitted. He buckled down, and during his junior year was honored five times with a "student of the week" designation.

"My personality changed," Krishaun says. "My posture changed. My speech changed. A lot about me has changed."

But Krishaun still has a glint in his eye and an easy charm that helped him become president of the Student Government Association.

"He has made if not a 180-degree turn, maybe a 160-degree turn ... ," says Lewis, vice president of institutional advancement. "He's a very smart kid, a very savvy kid. He sees the big picture. That's the reason he survived on the streets. That's the reason he'll be successful."

___

At Urban Prep, every student has at least one mentor – maybe a coach or a teacher. About 60 percent of teachers at the Englewood campus (Urban Prep has another school and plans to open a third this fall) are black men. They serve as confidantes and role models to students, many of whom have no fathers in their lives.

All staff members have school-assigned cell phones so students (and parents) can phone day or night. And they do.

Just ask Corey Stewart, a 24-year-old history teacher.

Students will call and say, "'I'm stranded and I don't have a way from downtown to get home,'" Stewart says. "'Can you come pick me up?' Absolutely, I'm on my way. Or 'Mr. Stewart, I'm afraid that I might get jumped on after school today. Is it possible you can take me home?' Of course."

Stewart says he doesn't worry about becoming too friendly with his students and won't hesitate to fail someone who's not measuring up.

Stewart leads a "pride" (more lion imagery) – another name for home room that meets three times a day.

It's one of the unorthodox steps taken for a student population that requires extra attention. That's the reason for longer school hours, the double dose of English and mandatory 20 minutes of reading daily, the assessments every six weeks, Saturday classes and summer school for those who need it.

Of the 150 teens who started in 2006, 95 lasted four years. (Another dozen were transfers.) They've become a tight-knit group.

So when Cameron Barnes' mother died last year, he returned to school the next day. "It was like being with family," he says.

And when it came time for his mother's funeral, the members of his "pride" stood with him.

___

Marlon Marshall was in a bind.

His mother announced she was moving to Michigan. She was tired of the violence engulfing her neighborhood; her brother was shot on their front porch.

Marlon wanted to attend Urban Prep his senior year. But he had no home.

Urban Prep staff huddled, and with his mother's permission, he was taken in by assistant principal Richard Glass, a Don Cheadle lookalike with an unflappable manner and a buttery voice made for radio.

After nine months under the same roof, Marlon calls Glass "godfather" or "Pops."

Glass calls Marlon "a great young man" who falls in love easily – a declaration that prompts the 18-year-old to rub his hand over his face in embarrassment.

Marlon had moved around a lot, frequently living in neighborhoods so dangerous his mother kept him indoors.

"Living here has given me so much freedom just to be a kid," he says, sitting in Glass' spotless kitchen. "I really haven't had a childhood. I couldn't go outside."

Just having a curfew (11 p.m.) was thrilling. "I can't even the explain the feeling I had when we were going over the rules," Marlon says. "I need structure. I sometimes get sidetracked or a little bit lazy."

And when Marlon's grades began slipping, Glass pushed him to turn things around – and he earned a 3.0 average his senior year, his best ever.

__

The acceptance letters began arriving this spring.

Trinity College. The University of Illinois. Howard University. The University of Virginia. Morehouse College. Indiana State University. Tuskegee University. And on and on.

When all 107 seniors had received letters, there was a celebration.

Marcus Bass wanted to cry – but he refrained. It had been a rocky four years, riddled with doubts, struggles in biology and an attitude adjustment.

"At first, I thought everybody was out to get me," Marcus says in a barely audible voice. "I wasn't used to taking orders from anyone. I was used to just doing my own thing."

There were warnings, he says, from teachers and administrators. There were outside pressures, too.

Guys he grew up with, would say "'you ain't even with us no more ... ,'" Marcus says. "I try to tell them there's something better than that. They just ... blow me off."

He's convinced Urban Prep has kept him out of trouble. "It's hard to say how they've saved my life," he says, "but they have."

But the Urban Prep graduation is an unfolding story and King knows it.

"It's just a milestone," he says. "It's not an endgame. This is not the fulfillment of our mission. (That) comes when we are able to see our students succeed in college and that may not be apparent for four or five years."

___

On a muggy June night, the graduates are gathered in cap and gown, reflecting on their journey.

Krishaun Branch, the kid who stopped himself from going over the edge, is heading to Fisk University in Tennessee.

He rattles of his emotions: "Happiness. Sadness. Proud. Proud of myself. Thankful. Successful."

Marcus Bass, the kid who wondered if he'd make it, grins with relief as he ponders a future at Jackson State University in Mississippi.

"It feels like I don't have anything to prove to anyone but now I have to prove something to myself – and that's making it through college," he says.

And Marlon Marshall, the kid who found a new anchor in life, will attend Earlham College in Indiana. "Everybody said we wasn't going to make it," he says, "but we're here and about to do bigger and better things."

Marlon's father – he left the family when his son was 3 months old – is in from Mississippi, his mother from Michigan.

Marlon doesn't remember when he last saw his dad, but on this night, they share a tearful embrace. "You're a much better man than I ever was," Marlon Sr. says, burrowing his face in his son's chest.

"Don't blame yourself 'cause I never stopped loving you ... ," his teary-eyed son consoles him. "I never gave up on you, man. I always knew that you was trying."

There would be another embrace before graduation night was over when Marlon Sr. thanked Richard Glass – the man who guided his son to the finish line.

___

Tim King asks the graduates to take the stage and recite their creed one final time.

They repeat the lines, rapidly and forcefully. The last words are joyous, and emphatic.

"WE BELIEVE."

A few raise their arms in triumph.

Then they toss their mortarboards in the air, red-and-gold tassels flying as the crowd cheers.

Giving Up is Way Harder Than Trying

Do you fear getting the very thing you want so much that you quit at pivotal moments?

You can’t bear losing so you bow out

He or she can’t really love you like they say so you find a reason for it not to work out.

Society will never accept ________ (fill in the blank), so you give in to the negativity and resign being an agent for change.

See your life through to the end.

Face your fears head on

Embrace the pain and walk through it.

Don’t let the thought of disappointment steal the joy that success brings.

Winning is often a building process

Not an automatic one

If it were

Everyone would be a winner.

Live like a Champion.

Play till the last second.

Play like Giving up is way harder than Trying.

For Great Men and Women Who Want One

I recently got turned onto this book and I just started barreling through it. It is an excellent read, full of wisdom and common sense approaches to matters every man will face at one time or another. It's also a good book for women to check out so that they might give it to the man in their life as well as gain some understanding about him as well as themselves. Either way, it will be of some benefit. Trust me.

If you still aren't sold that this book is everything I say it is, go over to my man C-Mac's blog because he will be doing several posts on this book, starting today.

48 Laws of Power: Fourteen

Law 14 - Pose As A Friend, Work As A Spy

Knowing about your rival is critical. Use spies to gather valuable information that will keep you a step ahead. Better Still. Play the spy yourself. In polite social encounters, learn to probe. Ask indirect questions to get people to reveal their weaknesses and intentions. There is no occasion that is not an opportunity for artful spying.

If you have reason to suspect that a person is telling you a lie, look as though you believed every word he said. This will give him courage to go on; he will become more vehement in his assertions, and in the end betray himself.

Again, if you perceive that a person is trying to conceal something from you, but with only partial success, look as though you did not believe him. The opposition on your part will provoke him into leading out his reserve of truth and bringing the whole force of it to bear upon your incredulity.

Arthur Schopenhauer
1788-1860

If you have followed this series, you know that my goal is not to get you to inact deception and trickery to your advantage, but to guard against it when you notice it in others. With that in mind, I have a saying that I like to use that really gets to the point of this law – “watch the ice break”. To watch the ice break all you have to do is play it cool. Don’t be in a hurry. Just relax. Pour a little “water” on the subject and watch them – “the ice” – break before your eyes. It will all be revealed in time, and just like the ice in a cup gives to the water around it, so will those who mean you harm. Just chill, you’ll see, they'll walk right into your hands.

Power Play

Same Old Sad Song

Why won’t you call me?
Your absence stabs me with despair

I’ve gone over the events a thousand times
Yet
I’m still left wanting to press rewind

Wondering
what I said wrong
Wondering
can I make it right

I never meant to break your heart
My feet just wouldn’t lead me right

Introduce me to the pleasure that forgiveness is sure to bring
Enduring your arraignment was difficult
But living out this sentence is maddening.
I’m tired of the Blues
I really need a new song to sing

You vacated my world
I remember the day exact
It was Friday the Hurt-teenth
No
Not a cloudy day
Your leaving turned the sky black

Your only reference now is pain
I can’t take it when the kids ask me why?
I thought by now you would have forgiven my cross words
Recovered from my spilled milk
The slate
Dry

I swear I’d take it all back if I could
Just to return to the days when
I was your guy
And you my girl
Before Black Friday
We was on top of the world.

Power Law 13

When Asking for Help, Appeal to People’s Self-Interest,

Never to their Mercy or Gratitude

If you need to turn to an ally for help, do not bother to remind him/her of your past assistance and good deeds. He/She will find a way to ignore you. Instead, uncover something in your request, or in your alliance with him/her, that will benefit him/her, and emphasize it out of all proportion. He/She will respond enthusiastically when he/she sees something to be gained for himself/herself.

Back on Track Tuesday: Finishing Strong

For Back on Track Tuesday, I figured I would revisit my goals for my 365 Day challenge. We'll cover more of the book The Alchemist next week. We are on the second half, so if you want to get in on the discussion pick up a copy, it is an excellent read for those looking to achieve their life's work.

The beauty of attempting to achieve your goals through a public forum is that it prevents you from escaping the reality of who you are. Since creating the 365-day challenge I have realized that I’m not good with meeting personal deadlines. I have the tendency to keep pushing the dates back. I think part of my problem is that I have ADD (self diagnosed). I get bored so easily. I will jump around just for the sake of creating another level of excitement.

The other thing I learned is that I have a fear of non-acceptance. As outgoing as I am, I sometimes question whether people will accept what I’m offering. This is of course in regards to my writing and other business ideas. But I have decided that I can’t afford to keep questioning myself, I just need to move forward, especially since I have a hard time getting excited about the work that I do professionally. I’m thinking I need to just take the recent advice of my youngest daughter. Most days Elise (her middle name which we rarely use) is the first to greet me when I arrive home and like most kids she asks pretty routine questions like, “how was your day?” Well, one day she took it a step further and asks me what it is that I do exactly, because I said my day had gone “so-so”. I explained to her that the majority of my day is spent sitting in front of the computer either solving programming issues or I’m biding my time by surfing the web, but that I don’t really “like” my job that much but I do it so that I can take care of them. Her response was not only immediate, but spot on when she suggested, “well, why don’t you find a job that you love doing.” Oh the wisdom of a 10 year old! If that wasn’t enough she follows up two days later by asking if I had found the job yet. The answer, which I didn’t really explain to her was both “yes” and “no”. I gave her the adult response of “it takes time to find another job blah, blah, blah,” but inwardly I had found the job that I loved. I’ve been carrying it around with me for years. I’ve just been scared to do it. Scared I won’t get the crowds I see in my head, because I don’t fit the stereotypical presenter of such information. Goal # 13 on my 365 Day Challenge was to complete “Seminar” by January 1st. Well, it’s August and although I did start it, I haven't come close to finishing it. The seminar in question is a financial education seminar designed to help people get out of debt. My goal is to complete the seminar and begin touring to help people take control of their financial lives. Interesting enough, I have presented “others” work successfully, but not sure of the reception I will get when my face is the one out front. People can be so finicky, but if I keep worrying about that, I’ll never do it. So, later for that train of thought, I’ve got to get it done.

With that said, I have some updates to my 365 Day Challenge.

1. Stop drinking soda – I did it when they took Coke out of our building and brought in Pepsi, but Coke has been back since March and I’ve been on it occasionally. When I'm not drinking Coke, those new Mountain Dew flavors have been pulling me in, but I'm determined. I'm going to take this in spurts. I'm going to see if I can stay soda free until the October book signing in New York. If I make it that far, then I can go till the end of the year. I can also see how much of a difference it has made in my efforts to lose weight by then. Which brings me to #2.

2. Commit to a five day workout plan. – I fell off the bandwagon. It’s been extremely hard to get out of that bed in the morning. I haven’t worked out but maybe a couple of times in the past 30 – 45 days. (hangs head in shame). I guess I need to read my own “Richisms” and realize that “the bed is the enemy of progress.” I have solicited the help of a brother that I attend church with who is a personal trainer and he sends me text messages several times a week encouraging me to stand strong and make better decisions with regard to my help. It's working. The word says faith comes by hearing and hearing, so I'm going to keep feeding myself positive words of enthusiasm, so that I will be the better for it as it relates to my health.

3. Finish complete first draft of “Chance Encounters” – I didn’t make the December 16th date, but I DID FINISH IT, thanks to some pesky co-workers who really dig my writing. Interestingly, their first names are similar. So thanks to Renetta Fuller and Renita Williams for staying on me.

4. Not so lucky with my story “Closure”. To me it’s predictable and I so hate being predictable. I’m still trying to work that one out in my head, maybe it will come to me. I’m not giving up on it. I have since started another story called Ruby's Blues that I like so much better.

5. Visiting California won't happen before the summer is over, but I do plan to go before the year is up. – Ced, I have family in San Diego area so we may get the chance to break bread after all.

6. Didn’t happen in Chicago for the Christmas holidays, but she got her shopping on in DC back in April (3 outlet malls and one indoor mall), so I ain’t mad and she isn’t either.

7. Done – saw my Florida relatives in January, just hated that it was due to a funeral.

8. Phone calls are easy - Done

9. In the process of finishing the changes to our house, but in the meantime we purchased a foreclosure and already have it rented out. We are actively looking for more good deals. Don't believe the hype people, if you have dreams and aspirations of owning investment property, do your due diligence and buy now while the prices are low.

10. Selling books ain’t no joke. Don’t think you are going to waltz into this game and blow up over night. If you do, it’s because it was long in the cards for you. The Bloggers' Delight brand will do great things for up and coming authors who blog, I'm sure of it. As we focus on the quality writing

11. Reschedule working on novel. However, I did complete a novel writing course and was happy that my work was well received by a multicultural crowd. As any good writer, I'm constantly working to get better and I'm sure with persistence I will be all I envision that I can.

12. I decided against attending the Book Club Convention because I want to finish a self-authored offering.

13. Already talked about “Seminar”

14. PowerCell – which is another great idea I came up with. The idea surrounds investing in real estate and with all the rule changes we had no choice but to delay the revealing of the plan.

15. Ongoing -- spending time with my wife

16. Ongoing -- spending time with my kids

17. I subscribed to a free Podcast I found on itunes that helped with learning Spanish, but I may need something more structured. Either way, I still want to learn the language.

18. Modifying the Scholarship idea. I had an idea early in the year to donate books to schools libraries and I think I would like to incorporate the book list into the scholarship initiative somehow. More on that later. This will be part of my “Changing the Game” initiative.

19. Reading more books than I can keep up with. Currently reading a great novel called Blood On The Leaves, by Jeff Stetson. I highly recommend it.

20. As I stated earlier, I completed a workshop and I'm continually reading up on the craft.

21. Still considering if I have the time to commit to 100 Black Men. The St. Louis chapter is very big on mentoring and I hate giving my word and not keeping it, especially when children are involved.

22. I have been slowly building my music selection. My Ipod took a spill and I'm awaiting a new one, but I can't wait to buy more. Thanks to all of you who provided music selections in the past.

23. – 40. Never came up with anything else to add to list. This is enough to keep up with. I think I’ll finish everything I want to by the time my 365 Days are up.

I’d also like to thank Jaded Nyer and Richard Brooks for following up with me on staying true to these goals. I appreciate your having my back.

Money Mondays: Love is Gonna Getcha

Ya know that's why man I be telling you all the time man you know LOVE - that word love is a very serious thing and if you don't watch out I tell ya that (Love's gonna get you) because a lot of people out here say "i love my car" or "i love my chain" or or "i'm i'm just in love with that girl over there" so far all the people out there that fall in love with material items we gonna bump the beat a lil' something like this
KRS ONE - Material Love

When you look at consumer debt, chances are, you can usually relate it back to matters of the heart. That's right, the heart. The heart is where you will find the issues of life. It is that place that tells the real story. Forget what you see on the surface, dig a little and you will find out what the real deal is.

Being a Financial Counselor is an interesting role to play in ones life, because the position requires you to discern what is at the root of a person's money problems in a relatively small amount of time. Rarely is it just a lack of money. We all have access to money. Some of us would like access to more, but in a good many cases "lack" is not the issue. Typically, money problems can be traced back to a lack of discipline in telling yourself no, using purchases to medicate past pains, using money to deny a certain reality exists, low self image or a combination of the aforementioned. While this is not a comprehensive list, it is a good start in getting you to understand how consumer debt is about more than money.

There is a saying that goes -- Money only magnifies who you really are. There was never a truer statement as it relates to money, because given your money was endless, we'd all see you for who you really are. Debt is just the result of you trying to express who you are with limited resources. You are trying to express what is in your heart.

Maria grew up with a mother who was selfish. Her mom had money, but she never brought Maria and her siblings much, just the necessities. Meanwhile, her mom constantly partied, brought herself nice clothes, and made sure she had a nice car and household furnishings. When Maria and her siblings wanted anything, her mom always cried broke and about how expensive it was to raise them without help from their daddy. Maria promised herself that things would be different when she became an adult. She kept her promise, she rarely tells herself no if she can help it, but she also has the debt to show for it.

Jonathon never felt he quite measured up to his brothers. He wasn't the biggest, the smartest or the fastest. I guess you could say he was just average. Jonathon grew up hating that his brothers got more attention than him. He always hated having to live in their shadows. When he grew up, he worked hard and managed to supersede them all in salary. To prove he was top dog, he had the best of everything. Luxury cars, big house, expensive clothes, you name it. However, the problem was he had no savings and he lived paycheck to paycheck. He spent all his money trying to prove he was better than his brothers. Now, the auto manufacturer that he works for is closing the plant he works at in 90 days and he doesn't know what he is going to do.

Charlotte grew up in a wealthy family. While growing up, she never experienced lack. I guess you could say she had a wonderful life. When she was in high school, her dad's company got sued and their family was practically wiped out. The problem is, none of Charlotte's peers knew about this incident, and she feels to embarrassed to tell them that with the exception of some money her grandparents left them, they are just middle class folks now. Meanwhile, she continues to feel the pressure to keep up with the lifestyles of her friends, but doing so has caused her to rack up nearly $200k in debt. She's at her wits ends.

These are just a few scenarios that tell a deeper story than what one can see when they look at the income statement and the balance sheet. There are instances when debt is due to medical bills, job loss or some other unfortunate event. However, most debt that exist is the result of conscious decisions that are made as it relates to the heart. So, if you are dealing with debt, pull out the mirror, look yourself in the face, and decide that you are going to fix the real problem, not just the symptom of the problem. Until you get to the heart of the matter, debt will continue to be a cycle in your life. You can budget, you can stop spending for a time, but unless you deal with the real issue, you are just playing games with yourself. The problem will resurface again. So, get some help, and change your life today.

For all you old school heads, enjoy this blast from the past.

Monday

Fresh Cup of Coffee

Come into you

Denizen’s grin
Life
Opportunity
Money
It’s all good

Reparations escape me
Shaven clean from memory
No chance for easy rise
Struggle to get out of the hood

Forget about that talk about lazy
Just tired of driving Daisy
Wages inequitable
For brown hued skin

Still we manage to come up
Despite being fed up
We use our spares
To endure this ride

Gank move being planned
Snatch the keys they can’t
Imbedded in my mind
Constantly on my grind

By any means necessary
I have a dream is in me
We shall overcome
Fight the power
If you dare

Cars and houses they can take
Chemically induced to set up rape
Weed given to steal brain cells

Read your cards
I’ve learned how
Spar with demons
They’ve been knocked out
How you gone defeat God's child?

Destined to win
It’s already in me
Not looking at them
It’s all good you see

Money
Opportunity
Life

Let the celebration begin!

Thursday

Freestyle Friday (umm Thursday)

Love Unrequited

You force me to write about love
But it pains me to tell you the truth

In my youth I was vanquished by its effect
So today it’s an emotion of defect

I loved with little return
Scarred by promises not kept

Tainted by brown skin deception
Light brown lullabies became my reprieve

Captured the prize with my manhood
Offering a little heart
A skilled courtier
Makes them believe

Still can’t control the feeling
Still scared to trust my heart you see.

Life is easier with love tied in a closet
Trapped in the dark
Mouth taped
Can’t hear the muffled screams

Life’s companion wrestles with me to set love free
I lie and say I misplaced the key
Pat my pocket
Always keep it on me

Every now and again love works itself loose
I’m encouraged to let love enjoy the day and play

Can’t trust a runaway slave
No joy allowed

Maybe tomorrow
But just copulation today.

48 Laws of Power: Double Up

Law 10: INFECTION: AVOID THE UNHAPPY AND UNLUCKY

You can die from someone else's misery -- emotional states are as infectious as diseases. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draws misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.

In his own time Simon Thomas was a great doctor. I remember that I happened to meet him one day at the home of a rich old consumptive: He told his patient when discussing ways to cure him that one means was to provide occasion for me to enjoy his company: He could then fix his eyes on the freshness of my countenance and his thoughts on the over-flowing cheerfulness and vigor of my young manhood; by filling all his senses with the flower of my youth his condition might improve. He forgot to add that mine might get worse. -- Montaigne, 1533-1592

Law 11: LEARN TO KEEP PEOPLE DEPENDANT ON YOU

To maintain your independence you must always be needed and wanted. The more you are relied on, the more freedom you have. Make people depend on you for their happiness and prosperity and you have nothing to fear. Never teach them enough so that they can do without you.

The Two Horses

Two horses were carrying two loads. The front horse went well, but the rear horse was lazy. The men began to pile the rear horse's load on the front horse; when they had transfered it all, the rear horse found it easy going, and he said to the front horse: "Toil and sweat! The more you try, the more you have to suffer." When they reached the tavern, the owner said; "Why should I fodder two horses when I carry all on one? I had better give one all the food it wants, and cut the throat of the other, at least I shall have the hide." And so he did. -- Fables, Leo Tolstov 1828-1910

The Alchemist - Living Your Dreams

When we pick up our story from where we last left, Santiago had met up with Melchizedek and was stuck with the decision to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have. Santiago did what most people do and came up with excuses for why he should stay with the familiar, but then he came to the realization that those that loved him got used to him being away as a shepherd, just as they got used to him being away, so will his sheep.
How can you apply this same logic to a situation you are facing in reaching your Personal Legend? What is the main message that the author is trying to get to the reader?

“In order to find the treasure, you will have to follow the omens. God has prepared a path for everyone to follow. You just have to read the omens that he left for you.”
Can you identify any of the “omens” that are trying to direct you to the treasure God has in store for your life?

Melchizedek tells Santiago a story that ends with the follow statement – “The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.”
What does this bit of wisdom mean to you? Share with us your revelation.

When Santiago arrives in Africa he is tricked out of his money. While he is licking his wounds he realizes that the owner of the bar was actually trying to help him as opposed to harm him when he grabbed him. Santiago makes the statement, “I’m like everyone else – I see the world in terms of what I would like to see happen, not what actually does.”
Can you think of a time (s) when you misread the intentions of others as bad when they actually meant you well? If those people were close to you, did you change your feelings towards those persons in a heart of reconciliation?

Do you make it a habit to think of yourself as a poor victim or an adventurer in a quest toward your treasure?
Can you see the benefit of making a shift in your thinking as it relates to obtaining your Personal Legend?

As Santiago watched the candy merchant he realized he could sense whether a person was near to or far from his Personal Legend. Just by looking at them.
Think about the people you surround yourself with on a daily basis, would you say you are around more people who are near their Personal Legend or around those that are far from their Personal Legend? How is the company you are in affecting your outlook?

Santiago realized that even in a strange land, he was applying the same lessons he had learned with his sheep. “All things are one,” the old man had said.
Have you found this to be true in your own life? How have you applied it?

Toward the end of Part One, Santiago meets a crystal merchant who he puts a days work in with. The crystal merchant informs Santiago that he couldn’t possible make enough money to get to Egypt, even if he worked an entire year. The crystal merchant offers to give him the money he needs to get back home. Instead, Santiago decides that he will work for him so that he can buy more sheep.
How does this bode with you the reader that even knowing that the “omens” are with him, that he is still discouraged about his plight. What lesson are we to learn from this exchange? What words of Melchizedek can we relate to this situation?

I’ve heard the words “Soul Mate” at least twice weekly for about the last month or so. It’s almost as if people are just throwing it around like its commonplace. However, it got me to thinking about just how many people end up with theirs.

In my lifetime I've had the occasion for more than one female to swear that I was their dude. Not to mention I have felt at one time or another like someone that I was dating was it for me, but then for some reason or another we broke up. So then comes the question, were they really my soul mate? Hmm, I don't know. I would like to think I'm with who I was destined to be with. This love thing is tricky though. Too much TV gets in the way of relationships if you ask me, but that's another post. For now I just want to know if you believe in soul mates, what does the term mean to you, and are you with yours?
