Power Nap - Hypothetically Speaking

I decided to skip The 48 Laws of Power today in favor of a post I was holding on to for Hypothetically Speaking, the series started by blogger Don of Minus the Bars. Don, I know you're watching, so this one is in memory of you. I miss your blog, that's on the real. Hope you come back to the table eventually. Iron sharpens iron my brother. When cats step away, a void is left and we are lacking an element designed to help keep us sharp. Which reminds me, none of us are here for ourselves. I know at times it feels like we're on this island all along, just going through some motions, but somebody out there is the better for our being here. So, let's keep soldiering.

In the meantime, check out this CTG Writers Group entry for
Hypothetically Speaking.

“Benny! Can you explain to me what this means?” Caroline said in loud accusatory tones. Benjamin Kneadmore , heavy in the throes of slumber, continued to lay motionless as his afternoon nap was being rudely interrupted by Caroline’s incessant jabbing to his shoulder.

“What…,” he said before fading out only to feel the pointed finger impugning his relaxed deltoid. “What!” he then blurted between cracked vocals as he scurried to ascertain just what the problem was now. Lifting his eyes like a well sprung pull shade, he turned from the pillow and began taking in the image of Caroline, his wife of a few good years, standing with her left arm attached to her hip and her right hand displaying his cell phone. He knew at that moment that he didn’t need to see her face to tell this wasn’t going to be pretty.

“This!” she continued. “Can you explain to me the meaning of these text messages from Naomi?”
“What are you talking about?” Benny said reaching for the phone while making sure his puzzled facial expression was firmly in tact. While glancing at the messages he yawned and wondered, “I thought I deleted all of those.”

Reading his expression, she followed with, “I bet you thought you erased them all, but there they were waiting to be found. I’ve had this sinking feeling that you’ve been messing around and I wish you would just tell me the truth!”

“Not this subject again,” Benny said as he rolled his eyes, an act to ensure that his body language didn’t betray him. Mr. Kneadmore had managed to keep Naomi a secret for months. She was an administrative assistant in his office, someone he innocently took a liking to during their time of working on the Philadelphia Commons Acquisition Project. What started out as lunch and a little relationship advice had spilled over into something quite different. The text messages were harmless. Benny knew she didn’t have anything there. However, Mr. Kneadmore’s and Naomi’s history was another matter altogether. Now that Caroline was on to him, Benny didn’t know how far she would go before she came upon the truth.

“Is there something going on between the two of you?” Caroline inquired further.
Mr. Kneadmore didn’t respond. He just gave off a blank stare as his mind was drawn to the thoughts of Naomi. In those split seconds, images of Naomi filled his conscious. Benny thought about how he never intended to go after this woman. How one day out of nowhere she just took up residence. Now, presented with Caroline’s question, Benny’s first thought was to lie. He could likely get away with it, but to be honest, he wanted to put an end to the speculation. Go back to the way things used to be between him and Caroline. Over the course of time things had grown unsettled between them. Every other week or so he was denying any wrong doing that her intuition warned her of otherwise. A time during which he realized he needed to distance himself from Naomi or risk losing Caroline. Mr. Kneadmore wanted peace. He didn’t like the riotous volatility that had resulted from his inattentiveness of Caroline. She could tell something was awry, so she had taken him to task on everything from working late to the reasoning behind his change of hairstyle. He repeatedly denied wrong doing, but Caroline would not cease until she got to the bottom of the matter. With that in mind, Benjamin wondered, what if it came out later? Would Caroline leave him for having lied? Maybe he’d just tell her what she wanted to hear and get it over with. Tell her the absolute dirty truth. If Caroline was going to ever hear of it, their relationship would fare better if the admission came from him.

Benjamin stared beyond Caroline as his thoughts darted fiercely through his mind. Benny loved Caroline something awful; Mr. Kneadmore had just momentarily lost his way. She could understand that couldn’t she? With the moment upon him and no time to prepare, Benny didn’t know which way he wanted to turn. “Answer me!” Caroline finally demanded, “Is there something going on between you and this Naomi woman?” Just as he was about to speak, his cell rang. He looked at the number. It was Naomi.

Hypothetically speaking if you found yourself in this predicament, what would you do? Feel free to answer from either characters perspective.

Additional question:

Benjamin spoke of loving Caroline. Do you think it is possible to truly love someone and engage in an act of deception? Does love make concessions for those actions?

From a woman’s perspective, do men fair better if they just tell the truth about indiscretions. Why or why not?

Let Him Speak

The ladies had their say, now it's time to hear from the men. I will add that because of the power of the "P", some of the guys didn't want to go on record. So my advice to women is simple -- Stop punking your dude, punishing him for keeping it real. You should also stop trying to turn us into women. We aren't going to be as sensitive as you are, we are men, we weren't created to be soft - we are the protectors, providers and lovers of you, so accept that about us. You are the nurturers and help meets. Some of you are more, but we'll cover that in the video. This isn't a bash session, it is a heartfelt plea for you to hear what we have to say.

Talkin' Out the Side of Your Neck

If you are either in a relationship now or have been in the past you have no doubt encountered a situation where you and your mate didn't take each others advice. Sometimes the result of which brings about an "I told you so" or at worst not heeding the advice caused the relationship to end. Sometimes you tell your mate the same things over and over and they just think you are nagging them.

Well, today I'm going to help you out. Sometimes all we need to get our points across is for someone other than ourselves to say what we've been saying. With that in mind, I decided to ask the ladies (the gents are up next week) what would they tell men if the men would listen. I didn't give them any script, I just asked them to speak their minds. This is what they told me. What would you have said?

Help Yourself to a Blessing

It's one thing to hear an expression over and over, but it's another thing to get the revelation of it by experiencing it. Take the phrase "It's better to give than to receive." I received the fullness of this phrase this past weekend when I decided to drive four hours to Chicago to support the taping of a pilot for an idea a buddy of mine has for a show. I have to admit, the timing of the taping kind of caught me off guard because I thought I had another week before it was supposed to go down. However, on Thursday night I found out it would be the coming Saturday, so because my man DJ and I have been down since 1997, I just grabbed the bull by the horns and rode out.

Fast forward to Saturday. My plan was to act as DJ's assistant to help take away some of the stress of managing a product of this magnitude. However, fate had something else in store. As it turned out a couple of people had issues preventing them from making the taping so DJ asked me to fill in. While I was totally unprepared for that, I promised to ad lib as best as I could and that I would try not to look like a "doofus" in the process.

When I tell you the taping of this show was incredible and loads of fun, I kid you not. The cast and I had an absolutely wonderful time. I think the experience exceeded our expectations. So what's my point. The point is that I went into the weekend looking to give of myself freely and I ended up being blessed in the process. I got a chance to meet some great guys and I got a chance to get in front of the camera which has been one of my dreams. I've never dreamed of being a major actor, but I would like to cut my teeth in the industry if possible. Who knows maybe one of my future writing projects will get picked up and turned into a movie. You never know. But with everything I have going on in my life it's likely it would have been a long time before I could have put any energy into acting. Therefore, it's amazing how through my giving, it has been given to me. That is wonderful. As I heard growing up, "you can't beat God's giving." When you give for goodness sake, sooner or later you will find that you also get blessed in the process.

Let me FLIP the subject a bit. During my short stint as DJ's assistant, I took some footage of the cast and a couple of people on the set. I can't tell you much about the concept other than what will be obvious from the interviews. For now, the intimate details about the project are on the hush-hush. When I've been given the clearance, I'll promote the show to the fullest and provide you with more details. Until then, enjoy.

Rich-bits

Before I attended the DC book signing, I received a great piece of technology, the Ultra Flip Video recorder (see photo at top right). This digital video camera is the size of my cellphone, but about as twice as thick. This makes it easy to carry in my pocket or in my hand, and it's so easy to use. Not to mention, loading video is easy because it has a built in USB attachment. That being the case, I plan on bringing you more of my own video.

Reality Blogging (part 1 of changing the game)

Here at The Rich House, I like to keep it fresh, so we are going to change the game up a bit. When I did my Fade to Black post everyone thought (probably because I wrote it in that slant) that I was quitting blogging. On the contrary. I just decided that I wanted to change the focus of my blogging. You will still get the thought provoking and entertaining pieces, but you'll also get some live unscripted footage. So hang around for the ride and let's see what new and exciting ground we can cover.

St. Louis Book Signing

Today we are going to play it safe and just share some photos and video footage from a book signing that I was invited to attend as a signing author. It was a great venue, held at a fairly new black owned bookstore, Not Just A Bookstore. I met some fantastic authors and sold some books from the Love and Redemption project while helping the store owners make a little money. That was cool.

Rich Fitzgerald, Foxy 95.5 Radio Personality Niecy Davis,
and Author Londa B

Author Carletta D. Washington, M.Ed.

Author's Pat Simmons, Rich Fitzgerald, and Brenda M. Hampton

As soon as that event was over I stopped by my local library to show some love to National Best Selling Author Eric Jerome Dickey, who has a new book out entitled PLEASURE. Come to find out, he had heard of the Blogger's Delight Book and was happy to extend us a photo opportunity. Thanks for the love Eric.

Hypothetically Speaking

You’ve worked hard to get where you are in your career, but you aren’t satisfied. You consistently raise the bar on your performance and you are an avid reader, always looking to improve yourself. One of the executives from your office stumbles upon your blog one weekend while doing some diversity research and is quite impressed with your ability to speak to the issues. On Monday you get an email from this executive inviting you to lunch to talk about some of your views as it relates to an upcoming project. You graciously accept and look forward to this opportunity as your moment to shine.

Ms/Mr Executive has wanted to try one of the better known soul food restaurants in the city, so you agree to meet them there. While having lunch you relay facts and figures in effect to let Mr/Ms Executive know you are the real deal. After some small talk about how each of you came to the company you realize you must have passed the test.

“I have a proposition for you. We are currently putting together a committee to handle some of the diversity issues we face as a company. This committee is comprised of other executives but after hearing what you’ve had to say I’d like to invite you to participate.”

You like what you are hearing. You’re beaming on the inside, nodding your head at all the right moments, listening intently, and you want to shout, hallelujah! This is music to your ears!

“In preparation for this committee meeting I have been asked as the sole minority executive on the panel to put together a report for my colleagues. Instead I’d like for you to create this document with some of the facts and figures you’ve stated to me today but I’ll need to present it as my own.”

Hold up. You didn’t hear what you just thought you heard did you? The light illuminating Mr/Ms Executive begins to fade. You knew there was a catch. Now that the music that was playing in your head has stopped you begin sizing up Mr/Ms Executive a little more closely. You wonder if they even deserve the position they now hold since you’ve gotten a glimpse of how they operate.

“I wouldn’t ask you to do this if I didn’t think you were capable. I’d consider it a personal favor and when the opportunity comes you can count on me to be there for you. I can see the hunger and drive you have and I can help you get to higher places in the company, but before that happens I need you to take care of this for me. You have some time to think about it, but I need to know if you are willing to play ball by the end of the week.”

Question: If you were the woman or man in this situation, and this happened to you, what would you do? Hypothetically speaking of course.

Fade To Black

I've been playing around with several ideas for posts and I just decided, I'd do them all in one. The interesting thing is that they happen to be connected. Funny how that happens.

What's wrong with you

Are you lonely? Are you afraid? Are you looking for acceptance? Are you looking for fame? Are you looking to mend a broken heart? What's your deal? What are you here for? That's what I found myself asking me one day about me and you. I looked around and realized that I wasn't really like anyone else around here. Maybe that was the point. Maybe that is how it was supposed to be. But the problem with that was that I saw the circles everyone else was running in, and I wanted to be down, won't even lie, but I didn't see where I fit in. Then it hit me. I was never meant to fit in. I've been trying to do it my whole life. Trying to be a part of something. Trying to get accepted, and it never happens, eventually being me gets in the way. At the end of the day, I can never ride with the BS. Don't get me wrong, I've done my dirt, definitely my fair share, if doing dirt is fair, but I don't have the conscious for living whack. Blame it on the way I was raised. So again, I had to ask myself what was wrong with me. Why was I trying to be down when I should have been innovating? Innovators don't follow what's cool, they create what's cool. I'm not saying that like I got the big head or something. I'm just saying I finally realized that I need to take my place -- stop trying to be (apart of) and just BE (who I am).

So what about you, what's wrong with you? Cause as much as you are having fun, you are working through your stuff as well. The answers are there, but can you accept them?

Last Post

I've been thinking a lot about what my last blog post would be like. I guess you can say after 17 months I've run the gamut and gotten a little tired/bored with the process. I've created a lot of material in these pages, over 300 posts, not to count what I did over here (another PUSH to be me). So, it's time for a new challenge. Time to create something unforgettable.

Blog Rapture

We appear out of nowhere and just like that we leave, but blogs are a record of our online existence. What will people remember about you when you are snatched out of the blogosphere. When it's your time to give up the ghost, what will they find in your pages? Will it be an accurate depiction? Will it be unflattering? Will you really give a shhhhhhhh.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's time to fade to black. Time to change the game.
