When tempers flare

Well, I haven't done one post on sports, but I couldn't let this pass. It seems the NBA can't clean up it's image fast enough. What with suits and new rules, you'd think these millionaire ball players would be beyond being "punked" (not in the Ashton Kutcher fashion, but the Junebug and Ty Ty version).
'fraid not!

It was late in the fourth quarter. The New York Knicks were losing badly. The Madison Square Garden crowd was cheering for the Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony. So by the time Denver's J.R. Smith went in on another fast break Saturday, the Knicks had had enough.

Mardy Collins figured he'd put a stop to the fun with a hard foul. Instead, it was the start of a wild brawl — the last thing the NBA needed two years after its last melee, and the last thing the Knicks need in a season already spiraling downward.

The fight went from one end of the court to the other. Carmelo Anthony dropped Collins with a punch, Smith and Nate Robinson went flying into the stands while fighting, and six other players were ejected.

If you didn't see it, thanks to our friend YOU TUBE, you can. (you know you like seeing fights)

We do love to see a good fight..so I watched it again. This is so pathetic. I guess it is true...you can take the kids out the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out the kids.

Are the being suspended for the rest of the season or just fined?

well you have a lot going on - first off - there is an unwritten rule in sports - and that deals with not humiliating an opponent at the end of a game. (especially on their home court) isaiah thomas the knicks coach took his starters (i won't call them stars) out of the game as a way of consceding defeat while george karl the nuggets coach kept his STARS in the game who then proceeded to put on a show - something like an AND1 mix tape tour. thomas is old skool - remember he WAS the bad boys personified. he told carmelo who he is pretty cool with 'don't go to the paint!' meaning it would be hell to pay if he did - expect a hard foul. well melo didn't make it but the next one who did paid the price. now does that justify the fighting - well i'm neutral on that. see i am not so caught up in the image of things. sure the nba is a marketing monster and that's how it makes their money. but the game will always be the game. you can't legislate things like this - they have to be worked out on the court. just like in baseball - if you are up 7 runs in the 8th inning and you steal a base - somebody is going to get beaned. in football if you are up 40 in the 4th quarter and payton manning is in the game, he's going to get smashed. that's just the way it is. the knicks did what they had to do. they are already down - been getting beat the last few years - what do those guys have to play for. the nuggets coach brought that on himself. just my opinion.

i dunno c-mac. true about the "humiliating" an opponent in pro sports, but the foul by collins so blatant it wasn't necessary. you get beat, you get beat. the knicks have been getting their lunch ate by everyone this year (as well as the past several years) and the ny press is adding the hot sauce.

as far as karl keeping his players on the floor, probably bad clock management (it was only 1:15 - 1:35 minutes left in the game) or payback to the knicks organization for what they did to former knick coach larry brown (a teacher of many head coaches in the NBA/college ranks and a fellow alumni from UNC-Chapel Hill)

..but regardless, the initial foul by collins was unnecessary. take away that play...the game would be a footnote for the rest of the season.

lance,

you may be right about the payback factor - and i am the type of person that feels that if i get beat i get beat too. no retaliation. but if a person is styling a little too much at my expense - i may have to give a wake up call myself. i've done it before. respect the game - respect your opponent - beat his brains out if you can - but with dignity and class - not in foolery! (is that a word? i think it is now)

and i agree that melo dropping that right was not that bad - him running made it MUCH worse. i thought he was harder than that.

My only opinion is this:

THAT WAS UGLY.

yeah, if melo would have stood "toe-to-toe" with collins. he woulda look like a big dawg...

...him runnin' away, made him look like a pussy.

and it's funny, if this was hockey, wouldn't nobody sayin' shit.
