First Class

It looks like another of our greats is being featured on a US Postal Stamp. Let's support her memory and go out and purchase a book or two.

Born in Newport News, Va., in 1917, Ella Jane Fitzgerald moved with her mother to Yonkers, N.Y., as a youngster and began to sing and dance from an early age. She began winning talent competitions in the early 1930s and was hired to sing with Chick Webb's band.

She later became famous as a scat singer, vocalizing nonsense syllables, and performed with most of the great musicians of the time. She recorded the song books of such composers as Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and Johnny Mercer.

Over the years, Fitzgerald won 13
Grammy Awards and many other honors, including the National Medal of Arts, presented to her in 1987 by President Reagan.

Here she is in 1974 showing you how it's done as she covers "Good Morning Heartache".

powerful stuff!!!!

after james brown passed away, there have been many discussions about what films should be made to honor our present & past sister and brother entertainers...ella fitzgerald is one of them.

They should try to get him buried first...then we will start talking about stamps and shit...

he shoulda had more than just stamps and movies made of him when he was alive.....but it's hard to idolize someone who was a "known" wife beater...

...the same with miles davis. known for his temper, kinda hard to portray an entertainer without breakin' out the skeletons in the closet.

update: supposedly, don cheadle is /was to portray miles in an untitled miles davis movie....but right now he's going to play to toussaint l'overture, who lead a slave rebellion that sparked the haitian revolution. this film will be directed by danny glover and also star angela bassett as toussaint's wife, suzanne. it's has an all-star black cast, check it out on imdb.com

Lance, you need to start a film blog. You really know your stuff.

I speak like you don't already have enough to do.

Just an idea.

i thought about setting up a blog, but i feel i don't have the dedication like you guys have to run it consistently.

although i comment a lot, it's usually in the middle of me bangin' out another screenplay or coming in late night from work.
