You force me to write about love
But it pains me to tell you the truth
In my youth I was vanquished by its effect
So today it’s an emotion of defect
I loved with little return
Scarred by promises not kept
Tainted by brown skin deception
Light brown lullabies became my reprieve
Captured the prize with my manhood
Offering a little heart
A skilled courtier
Makes them believe
Still can’t control the feeling
Still scared to trust my heart you see.
Life is easier with love tied in a closet
Trapped in the dark
Mouth taped
Can’t hear the muffled screams
Life’s companion wrestles with me to set love free
I lie and say I misplaced the key
Pat my pocket
Always keep it on me
Every now and again love works itself loose
I’m encouraged to let love enjoy the day and play
Can’t trust a runaway slave
No joy allowed
Maybe tomorrow
But just copulation today.
